What Made You Do It?

So last night, I wanted to give momma Philly a call to chat it out and let her know a few frustrations that I was having with something. We got into a long chat about the career choices that I have made, and are making, and it was a very good discussion to say the least. Now at one point, my mom started explaining her interpretation about when I first found design and realized that it was what I wanted to do with my life.

She mentioned how she never saw it coming because I never really showed an interest in design kind of things, but I did like taking things apart and whatnot — of this all was when I was younger. Now to get to the point a little faster, I look back on all of the things that interested me at one point (poetry, graffiti, writing, etc.) and it makes me realize that all of that time I was just experimenting with those things because I was looking for an outlet for creativity.

So what made me choose design? I don’t know if there is a stone cold answer for that, but I do remember the point that I became extremely interested. I had this Intro to Web Authoring class, which seemed really cool at first. But by the end of the semester, I realized that I hadn’t learned shit, and that the professor that I had was a joke. Now that I think about it, we didn’t even have a syllabus. He winged the whole semester, and that really pissed me off, so I took it into my own hands that summer to learn (on my own) everything that I was supposed to learn.

I figured if I liked it so much then I had to fend for myself. So I don’t know what made me want it so bad, the actual work that I was doing, or from my frustrations with the professor about doing a piss-poor job of teaching me what I wanted to learn. I guess I’ll never have a solid answer, but never the less, that semester trickling into the summer was definitely a turning point for me where I realized that design was what I wanted to do.

So I guess my point of this whole post was just to get you to think about your current job situation, or career interest, and think about what made you choose that. Or even if there was something that pushed you towards choosing that. My mom definitely made me think about that a little deeper in addition to pumping a little encouragement into me! Mom’s can be so inspiring……
