For a long time we’ve been trained to the saying “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Now to a certain extent, this holds true very much, but I think I have a different take on it now. I think in college, or before you started a career path (for those that didn’t go to college) it was definitely about who you know. College was a bunch of years of networking, whether that be at job fairs or parties. All of the above is networking.

So, you towards the end of college, you start thinking about jobs, and who you know, where, and how they could get you, at least help you get a job. That’s where the who comes in. Once you get in the door, the who goes out the door. Now you have to prove your worth.

If you actually got the job, then you’re more than likely qualified. But this is where relationships comes in. Now, I’m no business expert, and I don’t even have a business degree, but I love business and I’m very ambitious. I love watching those that are good at business. I take notes, I study people, I’m fairly good at reading people, I read, and I learn. And one of the main things that I’ve learned thus far is that it’s all about relationships. Not just getting along with others, because that’s what you’re supposed to do.

It’s taking it that one step further. It’s making that extra effort in getting to know people. It builds trust, and you can’t really get anywhere without trust. But it’s almost hard to explain how important relationships are. And not ass kissing either, because that’s easy point out, it needs to be genuine. Sharing stories, interests, talking sports, etc.

I completely forgot where else I was going with this post so I’ll just end it. Sorry.

Peace
